Care of the Spirit

Throughout the Palliative Care literature there are  a variety of modalities recommended for caring for the spirit of a patient and their family in end of life care.

Care of the spirit is becoming more recognised as an imperative aspect of holistic Palliative Care .Modalities include, art therapy, music therapy, meditation, prayer, pastoral care, massage , nature and even humour. As Kearney (2000) suggests no matter what the healing modality, is it always leads to an opening or creates a sacred space- an opportunity for patients to experience hope, peace, meaning, joy in suffering, and very often a connection to a higher power.
